Maize was found unable to walk and fending for herself on the streets of Houston, Texas last fall. After two surgical repairs and other medical treatment for infections and parasites, she healed up amazingly well and now has zero mobility issues. What a comeback story, right?
This girl is a red heeler mix and a little over a year old. She is incredibly sweet and loves to be active - runs, hikes, walks, playing fetch... you name it, she loves it! Once she’s worn out, she loves to lounge around chewing on her favorite bone or chew toy. Although she is a pretty high energy dog, she seems to know that once the lights go off at night it is time to curl up in bed with her human and let them sleep through the night!
Maize is a highly intelligent dog. She is crate-trained and does very well in her kennel. She does not whine, bark, or try to escape. She has already mastered sit, down, and spin commands! She learns quickly and listens well in a distraction free environment but does find it hard to follow her commands when she is excited. She is working on stay and leave it commands right now.
She is okay with cats as long as they don’t mind being chased a bit when she’s in a hyper mood. She is only trying to play and it's hard to her to control her instinct to herd. Maize does need to be an only dog. She *may* do OK with dogs that are quite a bit smaller than her, but she has been reactive to dogs her size or larger in her previous foster homes. She has been awesome with all humans and we think she would do well with children, especially older children.
Maize tries to herd cars sometimes on walks; it's in her genes as a herding dog. We are using positive reinforcement to reward her when she remains calm as cars drive by. It will be important to use a secure harness and leash and avoid busy streets when taking her for walks while you continue to work with her on this behavior.
Spayed, fully vaccinated and microchipped
